Importance of Play

Updated: Jul 25, 2021

Sensory Play

Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. Our “taste safe” sensory play favorites are unflavored gelatin, flour + coconut oil to make moon sand, plain yogurt with food coloring. We add extra tools/wood scoops to encourage fine motor development.

Open-Ended Toys

We love open-ended natural toys. Battery operated/light-up toys may be eye catching and fun but usually play time is over quickly because there’s

only so much to do other than pushing buttons. Deep, independent playtime is where the learning magic happens. Open-ended toys can be played with multiple times in different ways at various ages, making them perfect for development and cultivating independent play. Montessori and Waldorf toys fall into the open-ended category. They are typically beautifully colored, natural materials like wood and have fun textures. A few of our favorites have come out of the “Lovevery Subscription Box.” Each box is full of age-appropriate toys to be played with again and again. (Above.)

**Important note: Although these types of toys can be pricey, Whole Child Home takes pride in ordering from reputable toy makers to eliminate exposures to toxic chemicals and lead**
